I see many positives coming from the CAPs internship. I have been sitting in a classroom for almost my whole education, and I think trying something different will be a great way to explore my potential in a new setting. I have seen how people can really flourish through CAPS and I feel ready to put myself in a new situation to see how I can grow. Hopefully by the end of the process, I will take away something that will help me decide what I like or what I do not like, which are both equally important. Another positive is simply spending my time doing something I am excited about and will truly enjoy, which will make me happy. I hope to intern doing child psychology, ideally in a hospital setting. If possible, I would like to focus on toddlers and young children. I have not yet secured an internship, but I have a connection at Boston Children’s Hospital that I plan on using as well as the resources CAPS already has. My main criteria for picking an internship is that I get to work one on one with kids. I watched Arleen Garcia’s project from last year, and I would like to do something along those lines. Although, I would like to focus more on the physiological aspect of working with pediatric patients. Actually getting to work with the kids is what I find most important about this. I will use my time management skills that I have gained from school when the internship comes around. I mean this in the sense that it is important to be focused and productive during the day, and at home, I can work on the other aspects of the project such as portfolio, presentation, etc. I have pretty standard time management skills, but there is definitely room for improvement. I tend to procrastinate sometimes, but it has never been a major problem for me. This will really put me to the test, but I feel well prepared and able to handle it. Everything about the internship makes me excited. My older brother did a research CAPS project and I got to see how much he loved it and how much he grew as a person. I usually need more structure in my life, so I think the internship will be perfect for me. I am excited to get out into the world and try something new, something I am really interested in. I would like to build on my skills and really dive into something I feel very strongly about. I hope to feel as though I am making a difference in a child's life and truly gaining as much as possible from the opportunity CAPS presents. I am mainly concerned about transportation, considering I might be doing my internship in Boston and I am not very familiar with public transportation. I know the logistics will be worked out, but as of now I am a little worried about it. I have also always been nervous about presenting, but I find that I always feel so relieved after I just do it. I know I will be scared to present in the large setting, but I think it will overall be a really great experience. For the past year and a half, I have worked at Family Access in a toddler classroom. I act as an assistant teacher in the afternoons with 1-2 year olds. I have really fallen in love with working with kids and I would like to furthermore pursue this passion with CAPS. I have already learned so much about this age group, how to manage a classroom, and general people skills in relationships with the kid’s families and my coworkers. I have become very close with some of the families, and am a regular babysitter for many. This job has prepared me well for any type of work I choose to do with children in the future.
